Daniel H. “Dan” Lee, Jr.
January 31, 1935 – September 18, 2025
Daniel H. “Dan” Lee, Jr., of Pittsburgh and longtime resident of Carnegie, passed away
peacefully on September 18, 2025, at the age of 90.
Born on January 31, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Dan was the son of Daniel H. Lee, Sr. and Ida
(Shilken) Lee. He grew up in the Knoxville neighborhood with his sister, Annabelle (Lee)
Maurer, and brother, Robert Lee, graduating from St. George’s High School.
From 1955 to 1957, Dan served as a cryptographer in the United States Army during the
Korean conflict, where his skill and discipline were vital to military communications. After
returning home, he devoted himself to his career and community, succeeding his father as
President of United Safety Services (formerly United Fireproofing) for over 60 years. In
1963, Dan moved to Carnegie, where he would start a family and make his home for the rest
of his life, eventually relocating United Safety Services to Carnegie as well.
Dan was a patron of the local arts and sports scenes in Pittsburgh, with season tickets for
everything from the Pittsburgh Symphony to the Pittsburgh Pirates. A man of deep faith, he
was a lifelong Roman Catholic who carried his religion quietly and devoutly.
He married Bonnie Lee (Roderick) in 1963, with whom he shared many years of life and
family before her passing in 2013. He was seldom seen without a canine companion, most
recently his best friend Monty, a loyal Old English Sheepdog who rarely left his side until
just last week. He was also grateful for the years he shared with Donna Kasievich, whose
kindness left a lasting place in the hearts of his family.
With Bonnie, Dan raised three children: Daniel (Terry) H. Lee, III (wife, Vanessa Klapper
Lee); April Lee (husband, Ralph Mazzola); and Alexandra Lee (husband, Adam Lobel). He
was the proud grandfather of Javin Lee-Lobel, Raziel Gorov-Lee, Scarlett Mazzola, Lastella
(Stella) Mazzola, Paola Mazzola, Kinen Lee-Lobel, and Grayson Lee. He is also survived by
his sister Annabelle and brother Robert.
Dan cultivated a gruff exterior that concealed a kind and generous heart — and those who
knew him best understood that his bark was always worse than his bite. He will be
remembered for his devotion to family, his quiet strength, his steadfast leadership at United
Safety Services, his love of the arts and Pittsburgh sports, his lifelong affection for the dogs
who were always by his side, and his appreciation for a well-done steak (preferably from
the Colony) and a stiff vodka tonic.
Viewing will be held at Henney Bradwell & Nirella Funeral Home (524 Washington Ave.,
Carnegie PA 15106) from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24, with a
funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 25 at Ss. Simon and Jude Church of St.
Raphael the Archangel Parish (1607 Greentree Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15220).
